Queens’ College Chapel, Cambridge
Fairhaven Singers
with Allegro, the chamber choir of St Mary’s School
Conducted by Ralph Woodward
The programme begins with haunting works by Casals, Villa-Lobos and Bruckner, and includes Stanford’s exhilarating Magnificat. The second half is inspired by the 400th anniversary of two events: works by the Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria commemorate his death in 1611, while Aaron Copland’s extraordinary setting of the opening lines of Genesis (In the Beginning) and the world premiere of Carl Rütti’s newly commissioned setting of the final lines of the Book of Revelation (Amen) mark the publication of the King James Bible in the same year.
Programme:
Pablo Casals: O vos omnes
Parsons: Ave Maria
Anton Bruckner: Ave Maria
Schubert: Psalm 23
Charles Villiers Stanford: Double-Choir Magnificat
Tomás Luis de Victoria: O vos omnes
Victoria: Gaudent in caelis, Alma Redemptoris Mater
Aaron Copland: In the beginning
Carl Rütti: Amen (premiere!)
