Sacred choral works from prayerful and penitential to joyous, with works by Blow, Purcell, and Jeffreys, and Bach’s magnificent motet Lobet den Herrn. In the second half, a tribute to a strange coincidence: the centenary of Britten’s birth and the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, both on November 22nd. Britten’s radiant Hymn to St Cecilia is followed by Howells’ elegy for Kennedy, Take him, earth, for cherishing. Kennedy and Britten are brought together in Formation, a thrilling new work by former poet laureate Sir Andrew Motion and composer Thomas Hewitt Jones.
