Some of the greatest choral repertoire has been inspired by personal experiences in prison, or by a nation crying out for freedom. From the Hebrew exile to Apartheid, this concert will trace the strands of sorrow and hope woven throughout mankind’s history of exile and enslavement. We hope you’ll come along for the journey, which concludes with the premiere of a piece we commissioned from celebrated Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds – a setting of part of Nelson Mandela’s inaugural speech. Other highlights of the evening include settings of Jeremiah’s Lamentations by Tallis and Gabriel Jackson, a stunning parade of medieval images by Norwegian-born Ola Gjeilo, Michael Tippett’s Five Negro Spirituals, and Debussy’s Trois chansons.
