Music for Advent and Christmas

Saturday, December 9th, 2017 at 8:00pm

Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge

Fairhaven Singers, conducted by Ralph Woodward.

Our Christmas concert is an annual highlight for choir members and audience alike, featuring seasonal favourites and new discoveries. Enchanting gems by Howells and Villette, a neglected carol by Kodaly (marking the 50th anniversary of his death), a wonderful piece by Jonathan Dove (as we begin to prepare for the piece he is writing for us), and Mathias’ rousing Sir Christèmas are interspersed with carols for all to sing. The combination of these heavenly sounds with a free glass of wine and one of Cambridge’s most beautiful buildings should make the evening an unmissable treat!

Grief and Consolation

Saturday, November 11th, 2017 at 7:30pm

Queens’ College Chapel, Cambridge

Fairhaven Singers, conducted by Ralph Woodward.

Two powerful works by Brahms lie at the heart of Grief and Consolation, a full-blooded and emotional programme that culminates in the premiere of a new work by New York-based choral luminary Ola Gjeilo. We sing Brahms’ Requiem in the composer’s own version for piano duet, and also his Schicksalslied, in a new piano duet version by our conductor, Ralph Woodward. Sandwiched between these Romantic masterpieces is Richard Rodney Bennett’s A Good-Night, a tender elegy in memory of Linda McCartney. The concert ushers the listener on a journey from desolation to solace, where Gjeilo’s touching piece awaits as a glowing conclusion.

Lighten our Darkness

Saturday, November 12th, 2016 at 7:30pm

Queens’ College Chapel, Cambridge

Light and Darkness

Fairhaven Singers, with guest appearance by Perse Prep Senior Choir

Conducted by Ralph Woodward

Lighten our Darkness promises to be one of our most atmospheric and memorable concerts yet, tracing a vivid trajectory from the gloom of Gesualdo’s Tenebrae factae sunt and the rich melancholy of Brahms’ Warum ist das Licht gegeben to the radiance of Ligeti’s iconic Lux aeterna and John Rutter’s magical Hymn to the Creator of Light. The concert also features music written for us by two of Europe’s leading choral composers: Carl Rütti’s Lighten our Darkness and Cecilia McDowall’s God is light, which receives its premiere and also showcases the superb voices of the Perse Prep School Choir. Come and hear Queens’ College Chapel flooded with amazing sounds, as we transport you from darkness to light.
